Incognito

I found a pattern last month that was love at first sight. It put a smile on my face when I saw it. I knew right away that I had to make at least one but my thoughts quickly grew to wanting to make one for every member of the family and extended family for Christmas next year. It was that cool! It's a cowl called "Incognito". I quickly got started on my first one.

I found the pattern on Ravelry and it's free on the "Knitty" website. It's a popular pattern with almost 1000 projects posted. It comes with three different mustache choices but other Ravelers have posted additional mustache charts (like the one I made) and even lips. They're so cute!

I used Caron Simply Soft yarn in gray and black. I figured it would be easy care and inexpensive yarn for all the cowls I'd planned to make. I used the needle sizes indicated in the pattern, 8 and 9. I made the adult/large size and it turned out to be 8"x8" (slightly different than their finished measurements for that size but close).

Now that it's finished, I think I'll stop at just one. I like the contrasting color hems that peek out from each end but I don't like how it looks from the front. The ridges it creates on each end are unattractive and it makes the cowl fall down when it's pulled up onto the face. I was expecting the hems to cover the back of the duplicate stitches used to create the mustache but it didn't. That would have been nice. Even though I made the adult size large, it's too short. It doesn't cover the neck all the way when it's pulled up onto the face.


The concept is great! I love it! But, if I were to make one again, I'd probably make it with ribbing on the top and the bottom and make the cowl several inches longer. I might even knit the mustache in rather than stitching it afterwards. But, for now, one is enough.
